Service Reflection Paper 2008-09 Service Program

The service requirement at SJA is a piece of the curriculum, carefully integrated into all four years, to fulfill the mission of St. Joseph’s Academy: to educate women as responsible and unifying members of the world community.  As you complete your service, you are asked to write an essay reflecting on your experience.  You may choose to include anything that would help explain your service and the impact it had on you.  All papers must address the following questions:

  • Often, when we serve others, there is a specific event or interaction that stands out in our mind.  Who or what is the most significant person, image or moment from your service?  Describe it.
  • An important component of the service requirement involves giving of ourselves to those most in need.  Name a gift or talent you discovered about yourself while serving others.
  • In situations that seem saturated with injustice, there is an opportunity to see God.  In what way were you able to see the Holy Spirit working through those around you?  (Juniors and seniors, you must include and analyze at least two injustices that you encountered.)
  • Part of our call to service is formed by our openness to new, and sometimes challenging, experiences.  How were you transformed based on the experience and grace you gained from your service?

Be sure to explain where you were serving and any other relevant information.  Your paper must be 500 words, single-spaced, 12-point standard font, one-inch margins and should not exceed 750 words.  It should also include your name, your religion teacher’s name and the hour you have religion in the footer.  This paper is due with your service card on Tuesday, April 7, through Friday, April 10, 2009. Unsatisfactory papers will be rewritten and resubmitted to Ms. McRoberts.
