Members of the St. Joseph’s Academy Beta Club joined high school students from across the state at the 63rd Louisiana State Beta Convention, held January 19 and 20 at the Cajundome in Lafayette.
“I enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from other schools who share the same interests as I do.” Leah Redwine '12
Club members competed in a number of group, arts and crafts and academic competitions and fared well in several. In the group talent contest, SJA finished third with a dance routine. In sewing, senior Leah Redwine finished first, and senior Adrienne Ourso finished third. Junior Paige Bethea captured third place in jewelry making, and junior Rachael Giles was awarded second place in creative writing. Convention attendees also enjoyed inspirational speakers, campaign speeches and art exhibits.
“Our young ladies represented SJA very well by participating in so many different competitions,” said Beta Club co-moderator Emily Peavy. “I’m very proud of all the involvement, not just from those who competed, but from those who helped in any aspect to assist us in getting ready for convention.”
Junior Abby Grant campaigned for the office of state vice president. “I loved experiencing the convention in a new perspective and was fortunate to meet so many people like myself,” she said. “It was a privilege to run against so many talented individuals, and I felt honored to be presented alongside them as a candidate. I am confident that the new vice president will represent our state well.”
Senior Abbey Wyble was part of the group competing in the talent contest. “We practiced a lot and worked really hard together to perfect our performance,” she said. “We ended up getting third place, which was really exciting. It was awesome to hear everyone telling us how well we did.”
Redwine said she enjoyed the convention experience. “I learned to be myself and be thankful for the gifts I have,” she said. “I enjoyed the opportunity to meet people from other schools who share the same interests as I do.”
In addition to Peavy, the group was accompanied by former faculty member Kate Cook and SJA parent Teri Jeansonne.
