SJA Enjoys Halloween Fun Day

The St. Joseph’s Academy Student Council sponsored its annual Halloween Fun Day on October 31, and students, faculty and staff embraced the spirit of the day with creative costumes and good-natured fun.

Among the highlights of the annual event were costume contests held during all lunch periods, with faculty and staff members serving as judges.

Fourth-hour winners were sophomores Cori Martone and Lauren Parker, Raggedy Ann and Andy, Best Overall; freshmen Mary-Katherine Montes de Oca and Paige Deville, hot dogs, Best Food; freshmen Katie Prendergast, Claire Karam, Carley Gulino, Elly Bringaze and Alice Harris, iPhones, Best Group; sophomore Stephanie Cronan, Alfalpha, Best TV Character; and juniors Anna Cockfield, Madeline Drone and Madeline Barone, slushies, Most Creative.

Fifth-hour winners were freshmen Abby Nettles and Leah Jarreau, Transformers, Most Creative; freshmen Caroline Bourg, Megan St. Germain, Sophie Palombo, Ellie Tumminello, Katie Bonnecaze and Alaina Leggette, the Subway girls, Best Food; sophomores Alaine Dawson, Camille Eleazar, Alexis Nicaud and Kelsey Schexnayder, the Alltel girls, Best TV Characters; and freshmen Haleigh Pope, Leah Potter and Courtney Major, peanut butter, jully and a baseball bat, Best Group.

Sixth-hour winners were juniors Laura DeLatin, Kelsey Daigrepont, Cristina Terhoeve, Lauren Arikol, Gisele Calderon, Caroline Plumlee, Emily Macaluso, Megan Aultman, Brooke Hidalgo, Delaney Edwards and Kat Kleinpeter, nativity scene characters, Best Overall; freshmen Jeanne Logarbo and Camille DeMars, cake and ice cream, Best Food; juniors Brittany Bozzell and Jordan Dowling, hands, Best Group; sophomores Morgan Olinde and Mary Rhorer, Oompa Loompas, Best TV Character; and junior Kati Jo Barber, injured Alabama football player, Most Creative.

“Halloween Fun Day was just a real good time,” senior Alyssa Puckett said. “I looked real good, too.”

The live nativity group, which featured animals and wise men, was a hit. “I love the spirit around campus on Halloween,” nativity member Lauren Arikol said. “We went all out this year, and it was great.”

“It will be hard to top this year’s theme,” group member Emily Macaluso said. “We need to start planning a costume for next year to keep up our winning streak.”

Freshman Margeaux Marks dressed as a bumble bee. She said she appreciated the creativity involved in all the costumes. “When I got to school, I was scared I would be the only person dressed up,” she said. “When I walked into Main, I was immediately relieved. I saw all kinds of costumes. It was awesome. It was cool being able to dress up because it was a chance to show our individuality. I met a lot of people just because we liked each others’ costumes. It was nice to show the school who we really are. Today was a blast.”

Junior Macy Babin dressed as Goldilocks. “I really enjoyed being able to see all the different costumes and the personalities of all the students,” she said. “I always look forward to this day and being able to dress up. It is always a lot of fun.”

Sophomore Kenna Maranto and her twin sister, Kacy, dressed as the Double Mint Twins. “The thing I enjoyed about today was getting bunches of candy and taking memorable pictures of everyone’s fun Halloween outfits,” Kenna Maranto said. “Today was definitely a fun day, and I will always remember it.”

Freshman Ashley Greene dressed as a deviled egg. She, too, appreciated the uniqueness of the girls’ costumes. “It is good to have a different day every once in a while,” she said. “We all had a blast at lunch time, and everyone’s costume was very funny and different.”

Sophomore Greer Gibbens dressed in an original Virginia Woolf/Mary Poppins hybrid, “a combination I consider rather terrifying,” she said. “As with every Halloween Fun Day, I most enjoy seeing the outrageous ensembles dreamt up by my peers. For better or for worse, each costume represents a previously concealed aspect of the individual.”

Sophomore Kelsey Schexnayder was one of the Alltel commercial characters. “I was the Sprint nerd, and my friends were Cingular, Verizon and T-mobile,” she said. “The best part of the day was winning the contest at lunch for the best TV character. We had so many strange looks today, but overall, everyone thought our costume was the best and it was very creative.”

Junior Brydie Hiller made her giraffe costume out of felt and foam. “Today was my favorite year by far,” she said. “One of my friends, Kristin Annaloro, dressed as Waldo from Where's Waldo?, and we spent the lunch period making her hide around school and taking pictures that you had to find her in.”

Students also enjoyed goodie bags and door prizes courtesy of the SJA Mothers’ Club Student Appreciation Committee, chaired by Chris Virgets and co-chaired by Mary Weimar. Committee members were Ginger Cary, Brenda Eggie, Jan Valluzzo, Jan Petit, Cindy Chustz, Laurie Berrigan, Kim Kwan, Betty DeMars, Carol Marcantel, Kathy Carmouche, Josie LeBlanc, Renee Brian, Cindy Broussard and Joni Aucoin.
