Art Students Enjoy Spring Break Trip to NYC
A group of St. Joseph’s Academy AP Art History students spent their Easter break in New York City, enjoying the sights and sounds of the City that Never Sleeps. The 17 students were chaperoned by faculty members Stacy Rennhoff and Tim LaBauve and House of Travel representative Cheree Scardina.
Among the highlights of the weeklong trip were visits to the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, Whitney Museum of American Art and Rockefeller Center. The travelers enjoyed dinner at the renowned Carmine’s Italian Restaurant followed by a showing of Wicked at Gershwin Theatre; a candle lighting and prayer at St. Patrick’s Cathedral; shopping on 5th Avenue; lunch and shopping at Chelsea’s Market; and a visit to Tiffany’s The Landmark to view the art galleries, including jewelry and special pieces by Paloma Picasso. The students also enjoyed a personalized guided walking tour of the High Line in Chelsea by Merrily Kerr.
Sophomore Lillian Rabb said the trip was filled with fun and diverse activities. “I obviously loved the art but especially the MET,” she said. “Being able to experience all eras in one building was amazing. I loved trying all different kinds of delicious foods while I was there. I also enjoyed seeing Times Square, shopping and simply being able to walk around.”
Senior Mary Nguyen said she enjoyed seeing works of art that she’s learned about in the AP Art History course. “Able to see them in person, it allowed me to further appreciate their importance,” she said. “Not only that, I had a great time at the MET, MOMA and Whitney. This trip also gives further appreciation to artists from the past and future.”
Junior Ava Doucet said she was blessed to travel to New York and experience historic works of art. “Getting to observe these pieces in person let me have a clearer understanding of the material taught to us and have a better appreciation of art,” she said. “The trip also gave me the opportunity to learn more about my classmates and make new and stronger friendships with them over the week.”
Junior Emily Guillet said she especially enjoyed exploring the Metropolitan Museum of Art. “We spent three hours touring the different displays and sections,” she said. “My personal favorite was the Egyptian artifacts along with Ancient Greek and Roman statues. The trip was so much fun, and I’d love the chance to visit again.”
