A number of St. Joseph’s Academy student-athletes were honored by The Advocate as part of this year’s Star of Stars program. Outstanding male and female athletes in 15 LHSAA-sanctioned sports were celebrated during the 35th annual Star of Stars/Athlete of the Year celebration, held virtually on May 25.
Junior Ava Riche is the Star of Stars for gymnastics. She led her team to the LHSAA state title, winning the Level 8 all-around title with a combined score of 38.000 points. Riche was also named a Girls Athlete of the Year finalist. She was part of the 2021 indoor and outdoor state champion track and field team, competing in the pole vault, triple jump and long jump. She also played point guard for the basketball team, being named to the All-District Honorable Mention Team.
Senior Sophie Martin is the Star of Stars in cross country. In 2020, she led the Redstickers to a fifth consecutive state championship, finishing as runner-up in the Class 5A meet. In her four years at SJA, the cross country team finished first in all 43 meets. Martin was named to the 2020 LHSAA and LTFCA All-State teams. She will join the cross country and track and field teams next year at LSU.
Senior Katherine Scully is the winner of the Courage Award. A cancer survivor, Scully swam distance events and served as captain of the SJA swim team, which won its 10th consecutive state championship this fall. Scully was also named to the All-Metro Academic Team and the LHSAA All-Academic Division I Team.
The SJA swim team was a finalist for Girls Team of the Year, and head coach George Newport was a finalist for Girls Coach of the Year. The Redstickers have now won 10 state titles in a row and 21 consecutive Capital City Swim League Championships.
Athletes are selected as the best in their sports based on all-district, all-metro and all-state honors, performances at regional and state competitions and recommendations of area coaches.
