Bowling Team Advances to Quarterfinals
The St. Joseph’s Academy bowling team won its first-round matchup against St. Amant in the LHSAA Division I State Championship Tournament on March 27 at Bowlero Lanes in Kenner. The Redstickers, the No. 7 seed, avenged one of only two regular-season losses with a 17-10 victory over the No. 10 Gators.
SJA shot a season high team game of 1,067 pins and a team high series for the season of 2,932. Jordan Wingerter led the way with a 646 series with games of 203, 221 and 222. Molly Milligan added a 571 series with a 213 high game, and Blakely Prestridge had the high game of the match with a 242 in a 567 set.
With the win, SJA advanced to the quarterfinals to face the undefeated No. 2 seed Dutchtown. In a match that was not decided until late in the third and final game, SJA came up just short, losing 16-11. Wingerter shot a 651 series (257 high game), Ava Doucet had a 594 series (213 high game) and Milligan shot a 584 series (204 high game).
“The entire team gave a valiant effort in shooting a season high team match total of 3,052 pins, breaking its record of 2,932 from the match earlier in the day against St. Amant,” said Coach Garth Ridge. “The 3,052 also set a new school record for a team series, eclipsing the previous record of 3,012 pins shot in 2008 in that year’s state championship match. It was truly an incredible team effort.”
SJA finished the season with an 11-3 record and the district championship. Wingerter, Milligan, Prestridge and Doucet will compete in the state singles tournament on April 5 at All Star Lanes in Baton Rouge.
