Freshman Spearheads Service Project

St. Joseph’s Academy freshman Ellis Maughan, a member of the Redsticker track and field team, spearheaded a collection drive for a shelter that helps victims of human trafficking. Her teammates joined the effort, making it their service project for the year.

Maughan’s mother works at the shelter, so she had firsthand knowledge of the needs of the girls in residence. She reached out to her coach, Charlie Daigle, who whole-heartedly endorsed her efforts.

“I collected things like school supplies, art supplies, books, headphones, movies and video games,” Maughan said. “I also took monetary donations. I was able to collect a lot of things that the girls need.”

Because of her family’s association with the shelter, Maughan said the success of the service project was especially meaningful. She said the team plans to continue the service project into the future. “This meant a lot to me because I personally know some of the girls, and this was a way for me to help them and do what I can to support them,” she said. “After the donation drive ended, they reached out to me with a card thanking me for everything.”

Coach Daigle said Maughan provided great leadership as the point person for the team’s service initiative. “It was an honor and privilege for the track and field team to join with Ellis in this effort,” he said. “We plan to do the drive every year until Ellis graduates and hopefully after she graduates, coordinated through her or her mom. It is for a cause that does not get enough attention.”
