Red Steppers Advance to Nationals

The St. Joseph’s Academy Red Steppers competed in the Universal Dance Association (UDA) Regional competition held January 22 at Dutchtown High. The team placed first in Super Large Varsity Gameday to claim the regional championship, second in Large Varsity Jazz and third in Large Varsity Hip Hop. The Red Steppers advance to the UDA National Dance Team Championship, set for February 4-6 at the Walt Disney World Resort.

“I am incredibly proud of this team,” said Red Steppers coach Jade McCune. “They have worked countless hours and are continuing to work for nationals. The focus, positivity and work ethic are more than I could ask for. To see their friendships that have formed through this season has brought me so much joy. Our dances looked amazing at regionals, and I can’t wait to see how much we can grow in the next week.”

Junior and co-captain Bella Ferrara said the team came together as one, not only in dancing but in spirit, as well. “Last week, we had some tough practices and added extra hours, but it was definitely all worth it in getting us where we need to be for nationals,” she said. “We practiced confidently, and that is exactly how we performed. I am most proud of the work we have been putting in at practice. At nationals, I am excited to show off our talents and represent SJA. I am also excited to just be there and bond with my team doing what we love.”

Ashlyn Palmer, also a junior and co-captain, said she was extremely proud of her team and the hard work that everyone has dedicated to this point in the season. “Everyone is so devoted to this team, putting in extra hours and doing anything we can to build our bond and keep our team strong,” she said. “The feeling of giving our all and doing the best we possibly can is so rewarding. On top of that, walking out with a first place made us feel like everything had paid off. I look forward to seeing the growth that we can have in only a couple days of practice before nationals. No matter where we place, if we walk off the mat feeling confident and like we gave our all, I think everyone will be very pleased.”

The Red Steppers will celebrate their Senior Night Show Off on January 30 at 6 p.m. in the Academy Student Center.
