Second Group Travels to Klagetoh
Six St. Joseph’s Academy students spent a week in Klagetoh, Arizona, serving the Navajo people on Saint Anne’s Mission. The trip, sponsored by Catholic High School, took place June 7-14 and included a group of 12 CHS students. The summer’s first trip to the Desert Southwest in late May and early June was sponsored by SJA.
After arriving on Saturday, the students celebrated mass and enjoyed a parish social at Saint Anne’s Mission on Sunday. They also made a visit to the Petrified Forest National Park.
During the week, they immersed themselves in service with work projects including building a garden fence and putting in drip lines for a retired army veteran; building a pergola at Saint Anne’s Mission as part of the recreation area for the community; digging an outhouse hole for a family; collecting trash for a Saint Anne’s parishioner; cleaning sheep corrals; cleaning out classrooms at All Saints Catholic Church in Ganado, Arizona; and staining a fence.
The travelers enjoyed an excursion to Gallup, New Mexico, for immersion in southwestern art and souvenir shopping. They visited Window Rock, Arizona, to see the Navajo Nation capital and its museum. They participated in the St. Katharine Drexel route of the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage and in the Diocese of Gallup leg of the pilgrimage from St. Michaels Indian School (founded by St. Katharine Drexel) to Mary, Mother of Mankind Church. Once at the church, students participated in a holy hour and confession before speaking with Father Christopher Iwancio, OFM Cap., who was previously taught at CHS and accompanies students on the Catholic Leadership Encounter each summer.
Other trip highlights were visits to the Cameron Trading Post, Grand Canyon National Park and Winslow, Arizona, home of the famous street corner referenced in the hit song Take It Easy by The Eagles.
Accompanying the students were SJA Mission Integration Director Jade Spears and CHS faculty members Scott Manning, Kari Canizaro and Patrick Delaney.
