Seniors Win BBB Torch Scholarship Awards

St. Joseph’s Academy seniors Claire Holder and Emily Reynaud were among the four winners of the 2019 Better Business Bureau’s Youth Torch Scholarship Award. The $1,500 awards were presented at the 19th Annual Torch Awards for Ethics in Business Banquet on October 30 at the Renaissance Center.

The Youth Torch Award is offered in conjunction with the BBB’s Douglas Manship Sr. Torch Award for Ethics in Business.

“I am humbled to receive this scholarship that will benefit my academics in college,” Reynaud said. “After speaking with each recipient of the award, I am confident that our generation will make an extraordinary effort to promote ethical actions within businesses and as a state.”

Holder said being awarded the scholarship was both a blessing and a surprise. “I was very honored to have the opportunity to represent my school and family with this honor to display the values both have taught me,” she said. “I strive for excellence by setting a high standard to preserve my reputation and influence others to follow positive habits. I am deeply grateful and humbled that the Better Business Bureau chose me as one of the four recipients for their scholarship. I will continue the pursuit of greatness by possessing the proper morals and values to uphold this great award.”

All public and private school seniors, as well as home-schooled students, in the BBB’s 12-parish service area are eligible to compete. They write a 500-word essay entitled “Importance of Ethics in our Changing World.”

Holder and Reynaud were accompanied by their parents. Representing SJA at the awards banquet were SJA President Jan Rhorer Breen, Pastoral Care and Service Coordinator Sister Chris Pologa and faculty members Rhonda Baird and Kayla Moscona.
