St. Joseph’s Academy has announced the establishment of a new cheer team with the start of the 2026-2027 academic year. The Gameday Cheer Squad held tryouts in May, and 30 students across all four grade levels were selected.

The new squad will provide an opportunity for girls who cheered in middle school to continue to do sideline cheering as well as participate in school events, including athletic competitions outside of the school gymnasium, and events hosted by the Admissions and Mission Advancement departments. 

“We are not a competition squad,” said Principal Stacia Andricain, who is serving as a co-moderator of the first-year team. “We were looking for an avenue for students who love to cheer to support the school they love at events where a display of school spirit is needed.”

Lainey Honoré is the coach of the Gameday Cheer Squad. She said the team will cheer at volleyball and basketball games, swimming and track meets, Open House and other events throughout the year. “This squad has shown great enthusiasm, persistence and dedication this summer in preparation for game days,” she said. “They have had a lot of fun and have made many new friendships and memories. I look forward to watching them grow as a squad, build community among their peers and spread cheer wherever they go.”

Dean of Academics Aubrey DeJohn is also a co-moderator. She said she is excited to work with the new cheerleaders. “From the very beginning, they have brought so much enthusiasm, talent and determination to everything we’ve done,” she said. “They’ve worked incredibly hard, supported one another and had a lot of fun. I can’t wait to see them represent our school at games and events this year. This squad gives more students the opportunity to be involved, build school spirit and be part of something special. We’re excited for what’s ahead.”

Senior Briley St. Romain has been chosen as captain of the new squad. She said she is looking forward to building a strong team culture and creating lasting friendships while growing together as athletes and leaders. “I am especially excited to see everyone’s talents come together and watch our squad become more confident throughout the season,” she said. “I hope everyone enjoys being part of something bigger than themselves. I want every member of the squad to feel supported, encouraged and valued. I also hope they enjoy making memories together and developing skills that will help them both on and off the field.”

Senior Mary Strittmatter is co-captain of the Gameday Cheer Squad. She said she looks forward to building friendships and improving skills to showcase what the new team can bring to SJA. “I hope everyone enjoys being a part of a team and community,” she said. “I want everyone to have fun and feel they belong on the team no matter their experience level.”
