SJA Celebrates Mass

The St. Joseph’s Academy community gathered in the Academy Student Center on November 4 to celebrate the Catholic Social Teaching theme of Care for God’s Creation.

Father Josh Zelden, SJA’s chaplain, was the presider.

Freshman Natalie Wampler welcomed the large gathering. Freshman Myka Barker lit the memorial candle to remember the members of the Academy community who have passed away, especially since the last mass.

“We gather this morning to give thanks and praise to our good and gracious God, the creator of all things,” Wampler said. “Today, we focus on the gift of creation and our role as its caretakers. We join in the generous promise of the Congregation of St. Joseph to strengthen, heal and renew the face of the Earth.”

Senior Madison Rambo read from the book of Genesis. Freshman Emma Jane Prudhomme and sophomore Natalie Robicheaux offered the prayers of the faithful.

Lending their musical talents to the service were cantors Camille Funes and Grace Courville. Sophie Stelly, Anna Clare Wilson and Molly Kate Skupien were featured soloists. Pianists were Angela Sneed and Danielle Laird, who also directed the choir. Hugo Andricain played guitar.

Following mass, Dean of Women Christina Richardson announced that her office will lead weekly initiatives that reflect this year’s charism theme, Relationships: Sacred Threads that Connect, as well as November’s theme, Care for Creation. Among the activities are a spin-the-wheel game, clothespin challenge, gratitude jars, affirmation wall and, on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving, a surprise activity with music, face painting and sweet treats.

Richardson also announced the start of the annual Thanksgiving canned food drive to benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. All members of the Academy community are asked to bring nonperishable food items to school during November to help those facing food insecurity.

Senior Claire Bourgeois closed the assembly by leading the singing of the alma mater.
