SJA Celebrates Thanksgiving Prayer Service

St. Joseph’s Academy gathered as a school community on November 16 to offer prayer and thanksgiving for the blessings God has showered upon us this year. The theme of the Thanksgiving prayer service was Sharing Our Gifts in Thanksgiving.

Through song, dance, art and prayer, SJA students, faculty, staff and guests celebrated their appreciation for the diversity of gifts that enrich the school community.

Sophomore Rachel Thompson welcomed the large gathering in the Academy Student Center. “As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, we take a moment to pause, to pray, to praise and to share,” she said. “We share our material gifts and our creative gifts with one another and with God in a spirit of gratitude.”
Freshman Sophia Montalbano read from the book of Psalms.

The Praise & Worship Band performed Gratitude by Brandon Lake and were joined by the Red Steppers dance team under the direction of Jade McCune.

While students carried tables to the center of the gymnasium, senior Ava Kathryn Nesbit read a poem entitled A Good Thanksgiving, written by an SJA student in 1937. Thompson then invited those in attendance to bring nonperishable food items to the table while the Praise and Worship Band performed a number of songs. Items collected will benefit the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank.

After the collection, Montalbano read from the Gospel according to Matthew. Nesbit offered a prayer over the collected food. The choir, under the direction of Danielle Laird, joined the band for One Voice by The Wailin’ Jennys.

Throughout the prayer service, 10 SJA artists painted on canvases located throughout the gymnasium. As the service concluded, the students brought their artwork to the stage, joining the pieces together to reveal the face of Christ. The artists were seniors Ellen Adcox, Emma Turner and Ella Wall; junior Carly Balsam; and sophomores Charlotte Alexander, Kearra Grisby, Andi Hayes, Gabrielle Noel, Blakely Prestridge and Piper Ward.

Performing with the Praise & Worship band were senior Izzy Gruner, keyboard and vocals; junior Anna Crasto, vocals; sophomore Gianna Lavastida, vocals; Alan LeCoq, percussion; and Hugo Andricain, guitar.
