SJA Hosts Food Collection

As part of its celebration of the Feast of St. Joseph and to kick off the celebration of the Year of St. Joseph, St. Joseph’s Academy hosted a food collection on March 19 to help those experiencing food insecurity. In conjunction with the Sisters of St. Joseph and their lay associates, the SJA community was invited to donate food items in support of St. Vincent de Paul.

Students, faculty, staff, parents, alumnae, friends and Sisters at the retirement center on Hundred Oaks brought individually wrapped fiber/granola bars and commercially wrapped sleeves of peanut butter crackers, cookies and cheese-and-crackers for the drive. All told, more than 5,000 plastic bags were filled with snacks.

Sister Chris Pologa, SJA’s pastoral care minister, coordinated the effort. “I thank all who donated in ways large and small to feed the ‘dear neighbor’ following the example of Jesus, our Lord and Savior, along with the Sisters of St. Joseph,” Sister Chris said. “I appreciate the generosity and willingness to live our CSJ charism of oneness in Christ. May God and St. Joseph bless us.”

Students brought their donations to St. Joseph tables set up near the cafeteria. Community members were able to drop their donations off in the circle driveway in front of Mother Alice Hall, where they were greeted by Sister Joan Laplace, alumnae Renee Robinson Tullier ’83 and Wendy Williams Lutgring ’84 and members of the mission advancement, admissions and human resources departments.

At the conclusion of the collection, CSJ associates sorted and transported the donations to St. Vincent de Paul. Among those lending a hand were Susan Vincent, Linda Thompson, Mary Karam and Mari Tumminello.
