SJA Hosts May Crowning, Service Awards Assembly

St. Joseph’s Academy held its traditional May Crowning ceremony followed by the annual Service Awards assembly on April 27 in the Academy Student Center.

Senior Hattie Boone was chosen by her classmates, the faculty and staff to crown Mary. Also chosen to participate in the ceremony were seniors Elizabeth Bertucci, Adeline Bonner, Jenna Braud, Louisa deBlieux, Linley Denstel, Olivia Funes, Tiana Khuri, Camille Masterson and Annie Tanory.

SJA Principal Stacia Andricain welcomed the large gathering. She explained that the seniors participating in the ceremony were chosen because they demonstrate strong moral character, honesty, integrity, a genuine responsiveness to the needs of the dear neighbor and a commitment to their Catholic faith.

Bonner explained that the month of May has traditionally been dedicated to the Blessed Virgin Mary, whom she described as a young Jewish woman who responded so completely to God. “In many ways, Mary was like you and me, but what made her exceptional was her openness to God and to His Spirit leading her life,” she said. “Perhaps it was for this reason she was chosen to be the mother of Jesus.”

Khuri led the gathering in prayer, while Tanory, Funes and Denstel reflected on Mary as she is portrayed in the Gospels. Bertucci offered a prayer, and deBlieux read from the Reed of God by Caryll Houselander. Braud offered a prayer, then Boone crowned Mary. Masterson closed the ceremony with a reading from Sister Elizabeth Johnson’s book, Truly Our Sister: A Theology of Mary in the Communion of Saints.

Following the May Crowning, Assistant Campus Minister and Service Coordinator Rachael Duchmann explained that through service, we offer life-giving water to our dear neighbors. This year’s charism theme, Relationships, Sacred Threads that Connect, directed SJA’s service endeavors to those most in need. “Essential to community building is addressing the needs of the times and all people without distinction,” Duchmann said. “We weave unity from many divergent threads. When we are of one heart, we value and respect each person’s unique dignity and celebrate the richness of our global family.”

More than 300 students embraced the call to servant leadership by reaching 50 or more hours of service to the dear neighbor this year. Seniors who have gone above and beyond the service-hour requirements for four consecutive years will be recognized at the Honors Convocation on May 15.
