SJA Names Basketball Coach

St. Joseph’s Academy has named Tim Waller Jr. as its new basketball coach. Waller takes over the program from Coach Mina Williams, who stepped down after the 2020 season to pursue other opportunities.

Waller comes to SJA from Catholic High School, where he has served as assistant coach for the varsity basketball team since August of 2016. There, he helped lead the boys’ team to two consecutive semifinal appearances in the LHSAA Top 28 state tournament and two straight District 5-5A titles.

“I would like to offer my sincere gratitude to Principal Andricain and Coach Beaumont for allowing me this tremendous opportunity to lead the St. Joseph’s Academy basketball program as their next head coach,” Waller said. “I am excited and grateful to be part of such a prestigious educational institution. I look forward to joining SJA’s family-oriented school community as a faculty member and coach, and I am humbled and honored that I will be able work together with faculty and staff to help develop young leaders on and off the basketball court. Principal Andricain and Coach Beaumont have empowered and entrusted me to elevate SJA’s basketball program into a new era of competing. I embrace the challenge, and I am truly excited about the future of SJA basketball.”

Waller began his coaching career in 1998 as a graduate assistant for the University of New Orleans men’s basketball team. He has more than 20 years’ experience coaching boys’ and girls’ basketball at Millerville, Holy Cross, Redemptorist and Livonia high schools. He was named the Class 3A, District 7 girls’ basketball co-coach of the year in 2009 and Class 3A, District 7 boys’ basketball coach of the year in 2010 and 2011.

SJA Athletic Director Dorinda Beaumont said she was excited to welcome Waller to the athletic department. “I envision great things happening with the basketball program,” Beaumont said. “Tim comes to St. Joseph’s Academy with the knowledge, experience and reputation necessary to direct our basketball program to new and greater heights. I am extremely pleased he has accepted this challenge, and I look forward to working with him in the future.”

Waller is a 1998 graduate of Louisiana State University with a bachelor of arts degree in political science.
