Students Enjoy International Science Fair

Five St. Joseph’s Academy students qualified to participate in the 2022 Regeneron International Science and Engineering Fair-ISEF, held May 7-13 in Atlanta, Georgia. Approximately 1,700 young scientists from 80 countries participated in this year’s event, the largest pre-college STEM competition in the world.

Participants and their projects were as follows:

Camille Kleinpeter, Statistical Analysis of Infant Mortality with Social Contributions

Isabelle Gruner, The Effects of Cymatics on Artificially Auditorily Hearing Impaired Individuals’ Ability to Learn Music

Margaret Moe, Engineered 3D Cellular Co-Culture to Study how Fibroblasts Alter Extracellular Matrix Composition Estrogen Receptor Positive Breast Cancer

Shobe Manuel, Capacitive Deionization with Bipolar Membranes

Gabriela Journee, Increasing the Efficiency of Water Hydrolysis

Science Fair Coordinator Jacqueline Savoia said competing in ISEF 2022 was a wonderful experience. “Our students were able to hear from many wise scientists and award winners,” she said. “They were able to see what other high school students around the world are working on, and this was an amazing networking event for them. I am truly grateful for such an opportunity for young scientists.”

Manuel, a junior, said she was extremely grateful to have experienced the amazing opportunity of participating in the International Science and Engineering Fair. “It was a great week in Atlanta, and I enjoyed meeting other students from all over the world,” she said. “I was exposed to different types of cultures throughout the week; my booth neighbors were even from Zimbabwe. I was amazed by all the intelligent work and research that was done by these high schoolers, and I saw that everyone had the potential of making a true difference in the world. We were encouraged to pursue our passions for science and technology for the betterment of the future.”

Gruner, a junior, was equally enthusiastic. “ISEF gave me the most amazing opportunity to meet countless people from all over the world,” she said. “I am so grateful that I was able to share my discoveries at such a large and diverse fair. I encourage anyone going into science fair to shoot for ISEF. It is truly the experience of a lifetime.”
