Students Travel to Desert Southwest in Service

Fourteen St. Joseph’s Academy students traveled to Klagetoh, Arizona, to serve the Navajo people on Saint Anne’s Mission. The mission trip took place May 28-June 4. Chaperones were Campus Minister Chelsea Colomb, theology teacher Cecilia Methvin and Human Resources Director Ashley Ledet.

The travelers served in a variety of ways, including working as part of the Saint’s Anne community to scrape and prepare buildings for painting, weed gardens and yards and organize the food pantry and rummage-sale areas. They helped pack and move a family in need from one home to another. On Sunday, the girls celebrated mass with the St. Anne’s Mission community, joined members for coffee and donuts and completed additional projects onsite.

The group enjoyed the opportunity to visit the Grand Canyon as well as Hubbel Trading Post, home of William Hubbell, the first American businessman willing to engage in fair trade with the Navajo people. At All Saints Mission Church, the SJA students helped clean the Parish Activity Center and prepare the building for summer programs and vacation bible school. They also spent several evenings playing with young children from the community and visiting with older members.

“I loved this visit to Klagetoh on the Navajo reservation,” Colomb said. “The people of St. Anne’s Mission and everyone in the surrounding areas were so welcoming and hospitable. In the seemingly mundane tasks that needed to be completed, the girls rolled up their sleeves and jumped right in. They only thought for a second about it and were determined to complete the tasks at hand. They have such beautiful servant hearts and were willing to help everyone in need. We also spent so much time out in nature. I hope they were able to see God in all of the people they helped and tasks they completed and realized they were His hands and feet in serving the dear neighbor.”
