Swim Team Remains Undefeated

The St. Joseph’s Academy swim team won the second Capital City Swim League meet of the year, scoring 548 points to outdistance the 10-team field. The competition was held October 3 at Crawfish Aquatics.

SJA, now 3-0 on the season, finished first in every event, and three swimmers were double winners: Amanda Andrews (100 butterfly and 50 freestyle), Caroline Munson (100 freestyle and 100 backstroke) and CeCe Werth (200 and 500 freestyle).

“It was so rewarding to be able to swim during the pandemic and reach a somewhat new normal meet,” Andrews said. “I’m blessed to be able to have a meet and to enjoy the team atmosphere we all love and look forward to. I’m so happy I can represent SJA.” 

St. Amant finished second with 307 points, followed by Zachary High with 209. 

Scoring points towards the team total were the following. 

200 Medley Relay: Gabby Joffrion, Caroline Beck, Anna Webre and Mary Stuckey, 1st place, 2:02.65 

200 Freestyle: CeCe Werth, 1st place, 2:02.54; Gabby Joffrion, 2nd place, 2:04.09; Laura Purgerson, 4th place, 2:11.09; Katherine Scully, 5th place, 2:13.68

200 Individual Medley: Anna Webre, 1st place, 2:23.04; Caroline Beck, 2nd place, 2:24.97; Reed Talley, 3rd place, 2:23.63

50 Freestyle: Amanda Andrews, 1st place, 26.91; Julia Brinson, 3rd place, 27.21; Mary Stuckey, 5th place, 28.92; Frances Purgerson, 6th place, 29.03

200 Freestyle Relay: Anna Webre, Cecelia Castro, Alanna Meyers and CeCe Werth, 1st place, 1:58.53

100 Backstroke: Caroline Munson, 1st place, 1:05.81; Gabby Joffrion, 2nd place, 1:05.98; Erin Hollis, 4th place, 1:11.28; Camden Hull, 5th place, 1:11.50

100 Breaststroke: Caroline Beck, 1st place, 1:14.81; Erin Hollis, 3rd place, 1:24.62

Beck said she enjoyed competing as a team and feeling everyone’s support. “Everyone did really well in their individual races, and we all did our best,” she said. 

Three more swimmers swam state-qualifying times: Anna Webre, Meredith Martin and Katherine Scully. They join previous qualifiers Amanda Andrews, CeCe Werth, Camden Hull, Caroline Beck, Julia Brinson, Caroline Munson, Anna Guidroz, Gabby Joffrion, Laura Purgerson and Reed Talley. 

Next up for the swim team is a meet in Lafayette on October 10.
