Swim Team Wins Season Opener

The 10-time defending state champion St. Joseph’s Academy swim team opened the 2021 season with a victory in the first Capital City Swim League invitational meet of the year. The SJA Red Team, representing half the squad, scored 467 points to easily outdistance the 15-team field. The point total was all the more impressive given the absence of several key swimmers who were out for ACT testing.

Episcopal finished second with 289 points followed by Baton Rouge High with 236. The meet was held at Crawfish Aquatics.

CeCe Werth recorded the team’s only double win, placing first in the 200 yard and 500 yard freestyle events. Freshman Kate Fawley, swimming in her first high school meet, won the 100 yard butterfly. The 200 yard freestyle relay team of Claire Smith, Caroline Beck, Camden Hull and CeCe Werth placed first.

Other top finishers were Madeline Oubre, second in the 200 yard individual medley and breaststroke; Claire Smith, second in the 200 yard freestyle; Laura Purgerson, third in the 50 yard and 500 yard freestyles; Anna Guidroz, third in the 100 yard freestyle and 100 yard breaststroke; Maddox Saurage, third in the 200 yard individual medley; and Camden Hull, third in the 100 yard butterfly. The 400 yard freestyle relay team finished second, and the medley relay team finished third.

Next up for the swimmers is Capital City Swim League meet number two on September 18 featuring the SJA White Team. The meet will be held at Crawfish Aquatics.
