Track Team Finishes Second in Outdoor Championship
The St. Joseph’s Academy track and field team is the 2025 runner-up in the Class 5A LHSAA State Outdoor Championships. The meet, which featured 36 teams, was held May 10 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Track & Field Complex.
The Redstickers scored 41 points, as did Alexandria, to finish behind Barbe with 71 points. Rounding out the top five were Destrehan (40) and Mt. Carmel (37).
SJA had to make a late charge to finish in second place. With two events remaining, the team had scored 26 points. In his pre-event meeting with the team on May 9, Coach Vernon Langley discussed a number of possible scenarios, one of which was the meet coming down to the 3,200 meter run and 4x400 meter relay to determine second place.
After the 200-meter dash, and with two events remaining, Langley brought the team together. “I informed them that we needed a first or second place in the 3,200 meters, and we needed to get on the stand in the 4x400 meter relay,” he said. “They said, ‘Coach, we got this.’ After a day like we had, most teams would have quit. Two events left, and we only had 26 points. Thirty minutes later, we have 41 points and leaving with some hardware.”
