Track Team Wins Regional Title

The St. Joseph’s Academy track and field team brought home the winner’s trophy from the 2021 LHSAA Class 5A-Region II track and field championship, held April 29 at Catholic High School. The top three finishers in each event qualified for the LHSAA Class 5A Outdoor Championships on May 8 at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium.

The Redstickers scored 134 points, tying the school record for most points in a regional meet, to capture their third regional crown in four years. Rounding out the field were Zachary (132), Scotlandville (61), Baton Rouge High (56), Mandeville (48), Dutchtown (39), Walker (28), Ponchatoula (26), Denham Springs (23), Fontainebleau (20), Hammond (10), Northshore (6) and Covington (3).

SJA captured five regional championships and qualified in 10 events for the state meet, both numbers tying school records.  

Junior Ava Riche finished third in the long jump, third in the triple jump and second in the pole vault and was named Outstanding Field Performer. 

Scoring points towards the team total were the following:

4x800m Relay: Lydia Poche, Amelia Cochran, Elise Jones and Alessandra Purnell, 1st place, 9:50.92

4x200m Relay: Haley Jones, Simone Castelluccio, Ava Dunn and Hannah Jones, 4th place, 1:41.55 (school record)

1600m Run: Sophie Martin, 1st place, 5:13.10; Maddie Kate Gardiner, 2nd place, 5:25.32

100m Hurdles: Isabella Lalonde, 4th place, 15.62 (personal record)

800m Run: Amelia Cochran, 5th place, 2:29.63

400m Dash: Haley Jones, 3rd place, 58.22

300m Hurdles: Isabella Lalonde, 2nd place, 47.38 (personal record)

3,200m Run: Sophie Martin, 1st place, 11:18.03; Maddie Kate Gardiner, 2nd place, 11:50.79

Long Jump: Simone Castelluccio, 2nd place, 18-05.50 (personal record); Ava Riche, 3rd place, 18-05.00 (personal record)

Triple Jump: Simone Castelluccio, 1st place, 38-05.50 (school record and personal record); Ava Riche, 3rd place, 37-02.75 (personal record)

High Jump: Riley Wilson, 1st place, 5-02.00

Pole Vault: Ava Riche, 2nd place, 11-06.00; Taylor Walker, 6th place, 9-06.00

Shot Put: Lyndsey Darensbourg, 5th place, 32-08.00

Discus: Havilland Forbes, 5th place, 93-05.00 (personal record); Adrianne Van Duzee, 6th place, 91-05.00 (personal record) 

Javelin: Rebecca Bordelon, 1st place, 133-10.00
