Volleyball Coach Sivi Miller to Retire

St. Joseph’s Academy volleyball coach Sivi Miller will retire at the end of the 2024 season. Miller announced her decision to step aside after a 33-year coaching career, the last 18 at SJA. She will continue to teach in the school’s Health & Physical Education department.

Miller’s regular season record at SJA through the 2023 season is 560-162. She led the Redstickers to four Division I state championships (2007, 2008, 2009 and 2013) and five state tournament runner-up finishes (2014, 2016, 2017, 2020 and 2021). Her teams finished as district champions in each of her 17 full years as coach.

“It truly is a bittersweet moment for me as I step away from coaching after 33 incredible years,” Miller said. “Coaching has been such a meaningful part of my life, and I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented and inspiring young athletes over the years. It’s been a privilege to guide them not only in the sport of volleyball but also in their personal growth, teaching them life lessons about perseverance, teamwork and character. While I’ll miss the daily challenges and joys of coaching, I am grateful for the countless memories and the strong bonds built with players, fellow coaches and the St. Joseph’s community.”

Miller joined the SJA athletic department in 2007 after a year at Redemptorist High School. Her family had moved to Baton Rouge from New Orleans after being displaced by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Prior to that, Miller spent nine years at Cabrini High School, leading the team to the first state volleyball championship in school history in 2001. She was named the Division II coach of the year by the Louisiana Volleyball Coaches Association that year.

“Coach Sivi has been an integral part of our volleyball program, and her impact on the lives of her student-athletes and coaches is immeasurable,” said Principal Stacia Andricain. “Beyond the wins and accolades, Coach Sivi has been a mentor, a role model and a source of unwavering support for her athletes. Her dedication to fostering sportsmanship and a nurturing environment will be missed.”

Miller attended Tulane University on a volleyball scholarship, graduating in 1989. She served as captain of the Green Wave team in 1988.

Athletic Director Erin Hart said that while SJA will long celebrate Miller’s success on the court, her legacy will be defined by her impact on her players. “She has been a strong, compassionate and joyful leader of the athletes who have gone through her program,” Hart said. “Coach Sivi has exemplified the mission of the Sisters in her specific care to develop our students into confident and capable young women. She will be sorely missed as a head coach.”
